After the historic announcement by UEFA and France Football, the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony is set to take place in London for the first time ever. The 70th edition of football’s most prestigious individual award will be held on October 26, marking a major shift from its traditional home in Paris. Organisers confirmed that the decision was made to honour Sir Stanley Matthews, the first-ever Ballon d'Or winner 70 years ago, while also celebrating the global growth of the award.

The race for the 2026 Ballon d'Or is already gaining attention, with several big names emerging as strong contenders. Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is among the favourites after an outstanding campaign in which he scored 61 goals and provided 7 assists in 51 matches. Kane also guided Bayern to Bundesliga and DFB Pokal success while winning the European Golden Shoe.

Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal is another top challenger after recording 24 goals and 18 assists in 45 appearances and helping his side win the La Liga title. Paris Saint Germain star Ousmane Dembele currently holds the men’s award, while Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati is the reigning women’s Ballon d'Or winner. UEFA and France Football also confirmed that their partnership, which began in 2024, will continue as they aim to expand the global appeal of the ceremony.
