Batting great Sunil Gavaskar is of the opinion that in-form Virat Kohli could well equal Michael Clarke’s record of four double hundreds in a calendar year in the fifth and final Test against England starting in Chennai next week.

The Indian skipper’s 235 in the fourth Test that concluded in Mumbai on Monday (Dec 12) helped seal the series 3-0 as he became only the fifth batsman to score three double tons in a year. He hit an exact 200 against West Indies in North Sound in July  and 211 against New Zealand in Indore in October.

“Kohli can very well score four double centuries as India still have one more Test to play against England. His form, throughout the year, has been brilliant. And his 235 at the Wankhede Stadium was absolutely special,” Gavaskar told NDTV.

“I think the people present at the stadium on Sunday were privileged to see such a masterclass. There were several youngsters in the stands and it would be a great learning experience for them.”

Kohli also became only the second Indian captain after Gavaskar to score 500-plus runs in a Test series.

“The way he was running between the wickets shows a great deal about his physical fitness. With improved fitness, you become mentally stronger. Kohli didn't allow any sort of weakness. He scored runs quickly and was mentally sharp,” the little master said.

Gavaskar also praised the batting efforts of off-spinner Jayant Yadav who scored a maiden Test century and forged a 241-run stand with Kohli for the eighth wicket.

“I must say that he batted like Virat Kohli in the first hour of play. That is the biggest compliment that I can give him. His performance shows the bench strength of the Indian team,” Gavaskar said.
