“Dhoni Review System” overturns on-field umpire’s decision to give Jasprit Bumrah a life

There is hardly any doubt about MS Dhoni’s amazing game-reading ability and today, in the match between India and Sri Lanka, it was on display yet again. Despite the on-field umpire ruling Jasprit Bumrah out, Dhoni, from the non-striker’s end, asked for the review and instantly got it overturned.

It was a day that a few would have seen it coming. In the match between a team that has arguably been playing a fascinating brand of limited-overs cricket lately and a team that has been on a 12-match losing streak, the latter got the better of the former through a terrific demonstration of swing bowling. After India were restricted to a precarious situation of 29/7, Dhoni decided to take matters into his own hands and kept the strike for most of the time and found occasional boundaries to keep the scorecard going.

He was ably supported by Jasprit Bumrah for quite some time, who defended the balls quite nicely. But a brilliant arm ball by Sachith Pathirana caught him flat on the back leg and the Sri Lankans instantly went on appealing for a leg before wicket. And they were duly obliged by the on-field umpire as well, who without any hesitation raised his finger. However, MS Dhoni, as is his wont, immediately signaled for a review, even before Bumrah had a chance to react to the decision. And what a review it turned out to be!

The replays showed that the ball had come back from outside the off-stump but had just about enough to clip the stumps. However, since the impact with the pad had been outside the off stump, Bumrah survived the scare. The crowd, who had not had too many opportunities to shout about their team's performance, enjoyed Dhoni's brilliant ability to read the game as was evident with their response when the third umpire reversed the decision. However, that joy didn’t last long for the Gujarat pacer, in the next over, fell prey to the same bowler when he tried to slog him over the square-leg.
