Suresh Raina clears Yo-Yo test to pave way for national selection

Suresh Raina has cleared the much hyped and mandatory Yo-Yo test at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore that he informed through his social media, on Tuesday. The southpaw last played for India in the England series earlier this year and would eye a return for next year's South African tour.

Raina, along with Yuvraj Singh, was excluded from the limited-over series in Sri Lanka because of the failure in the Yo-Yo test, which the Indian cricket board has now made mandatory for all national players. It also prevented the Uttar Pradesh player to get into the India A one-day series against the New Zealand A team.

However, on Thursday, the 31-year-old announced through his social media that he has finally cleared his Yo-Yo Test, where he thanked his coach and teammates for keeping him inspired. He has been a regular in the domestic cricket that has helped him get his fitness back.

Raina played his last international Test and ODI back in January and October 2015, respectively. Though he was quite active in IPL with new franchise Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017, he remained quite subdued in national colours. While he was ruled out with Chikungunya from the 2016 New Zealand series, he made little contribution in the T20 series against England earlier this year.

The southpaw has been unable to make a comeback to the fore since then and India, in the meantime, have seen players like Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav competing for the middle order with the experienced Dinesh Karthik also making a strong argument with his domestic stint.

His clearance comes just before India’s series of South Africa that starts in January next year. However, with BCCI already announcing the Test squad and India developing a set team over a year, Raina is unlikely to get a chance in the side for the limited-over series before IPL.
