Champions Trophy Group B | Who can make it to the semi-finals and how
Having seen the group or even the first round of matches, most fans would have assumed that the clash between India and South Africa would be for the top spot. However, with Pakistan beating the Proteas and Sri Lanka hammering the Indians, the group has turned into potential quarter-finals.
Fixtures:
India Vs. South Africa, Sun 11 June, The Oval, London, England.
Pakistan Vs. Sri Lanka, 12 June, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Wales.
Here is how each team can make it to the semi-final
India
Despite the loss against Sri Lanka, India finds themselves in the comfortable position of top spot needing just a point to secure qualification into the semi-final of the competition. However, the chances of just one point appear to be slim with the rain at the Oval expected to be just 10%. The equation is simple for India. Win the game and they are through, lose and they are out. This quite easily is a quarter-final.
South Africa
South Africa hold the head-to-head advantage over their Indian counterparts with 45 wins compared to the Asian team's 28. The Proteas even won the ODI series in India, the last time the two faced off in 2015. Being the best team in the world they would know that due to their run rate being lower than India's, nothing but a win will suffice for them.
Sri Lanka
There are some showers expected a couple of days before the match against Pakistan and an hour or so before the game. However, after their win against India, the wind will be in their sails and even a washout cannot stop them from qualifying unless the India-South Africa game is also washed out. A loss is the only way this inexperienced Sri Lankan side can be eliminated from the tournament.
Pakistan
Despite beating the best ODI team in the world, albeit with some help from the rain Gods, Pakistan are the worst-placed team in the group. However, that makes the equation for them as simple as this. Winning the game is the only way for them to qualify for the semi-final. But the perennial dark horses have a great chance of causing an upset as either them or Sri Lanka will be able to make it to the next round ahead of either the defending champions or the best team in the world.
