Winning Champions Trophy is priority, not just beating India : Inzamam
Pakistan chief selector and former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has said his team's target is not only to beat India but to also win the Champions Trophy, which starts in England and Wales next month. The subcontinent giants will renew their rivalry in the group stage in Birmingham on June 4.
India have not lost to Pakistan in the World Cup and World T20. However, Pakistan lead 2-1 head-to-head in the Champions Trophy. Although Pakistan are eighth in the ODI rankings, Inzamam is confident that the team can cause an upset.
“We are not going to England just to beat India but our prime target is to win the championship,” Inzamam told the Dawn newspaper.
Owing to the political tensions between the Asian neighbours, their cricket teams haven't played each other on a regular basis. The last time the two met was in the 2015 World Cup where India won by 76 runs.
Earlier, former India captain Sourav Ganguly said Pakistan's inability to keep up with India was the reason the Men in Blue would emerge victorious in the tournament.
“In the last eight to 10 years there has been a massive difference in the quality between India and Pakistan and that has been one of the major reasons why India have continued to dominate Pakistan (in ICC events). I believe India will do it again in the Champions Trophy in Birmingham on June 4,” Ganguly told the India Today website.
