MasterChef ? Nathan Lyon's kitchen antics delay Sheffield Shield match by 30 minutes
Cricket matches have been interrupted innumerable times before, for reasons strange and stranger, and Nathan Lyon’s kitchen incident would definitely enter the top bin. He was busy watching cricket in the dressing room forgetting his burnt toast until it set off the fire alarm and stopped the game.
The incident occurred during a Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and Queensland at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, when a fire-alarm led to the game being halted for half an hour and even the fire department had to be disturbed.
Later, it was found that the alarm was set-off by Nathan Lyon’s burnt toast in the changing room’s kitchen and it was enough to cause a panic.
“(The toast) popped up first and I wasn’t happy so I put it back down and I got carried away watching the cricket. There’s a first for everything. I was getting a bit bored in the change-rooms," Lyon was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
However, given the Aussie pedigree, the spinner found humour in this incident as well.
“Steven Smith already said he’s going to cover it (the fire-truck call-out fee),” Lyon said.
New South Wales needed just 18 runs for the win but Lyon’s kitchen antics forced them to have early tea before they could go out onto the field again. However, once everything was sorted out, Kurtis Patterson and Daniel Hughes returned to the pitch and completed a 6-wicket win over Queensland.
