WATCH | Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara share a cheeky smile after taking four runs on one ball

In the closing stages of the second day when Virat Kohli came out to bat following Murali Vijay’s cheap dismissal, the skipper found it extremely easy to score as the pitch had hardly anything left for the bowlers who had claimed just one wicket in the entire day. 

India witnessed a typical Pujara innings, who took an eternity to get to his century and eventually ending the day on 121 not out from 284 balls, facing 63 more balls than Vijay. Hence, when a pumped up Virat Kohli came into the crease in the 76 over, the right-hander was spent and was solely focused on seeing out the remaining overs.

The incident in question took place in the 85 over, when Kohli was facing Lahiru Gamage. After he comfortably pushed the delivery to the short cover for a quick single, Pujara was not ready for anything more than that. But, given how Sri Lanka’s course of fielding had gone in the second day, they came up with an utterly poor throw that left the player backing it up wrong-footed.

The throw looked to be destined for the square leg boundary but Kohli realized that it would not be the case. With no fielder in that position, Kohli started running for overthrows. Pujara, who had just reached the striker’s end realised it late and ran for the second and third run. Thankfully, he had all the time in the world to complete it with Sri Lanka fielders from the long-off chasing it. Kohli, who was on double time all this while, was patiently waiting for Pujara to finish the third run and come for the fourth.

Pujara’s heavy legs didn’t want any more of it but he couldn’t ignore the captain’s call and eventually went for the last run churning out the last ounce of breath left in him. Kohli, however, understood that he was asking too much from his teammate, who had faced around 80 overs prior to that and the duo shared a light smile soon after. The Sri Lankan fielder ended up throwing the ball towards Kohli’s end, which pretty much summed up their day.
