Angelo Mathews: All we need to do is to win that one game to gain confidence

Former Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews believes that the struggling side is in search of that one win that will give them the momentum to turn things around. The all-rounder has also lamented the heavily injury-struck squad, which could impact very little against a perfect side like India.

Sri Lanka have been a mess of late on the cricketing front and have posed no challenge whatsoever to the visiting Indian team in the ongoing series. After a dismal Test Series that saw the Lankans losing 3-0 at home, the five match ODI series looks to head towards a familiar result.

They have already lost the first four matches with India dominating in every aspect and the former skipper believes that the side has never really come out of their disappointing series loss to Zimbabwe.

“Losing the Zimbabwe series was a bitter pill to swallow. We have not had any momentum since then. The moment we get our momentum back, everything will fall in line," the 30-year old said at the press conference, as reported by Cricbuzz.

Barring a slight competition in the 2 ODI where India were reduced to 131 for 7 before scrapping to a close three wicket win, Virat Kohli and company have looked invincible so far. And Mathews thinks that the Lankans would need one good game to bounce back to winning ways.

“It's all about momentum. All that we need is to win one game and when that happens, I am sure we will turn things around. That will help us to overcome many things. It is very hard to keep losing like this. The whole team is down.”

Sri Lanka had shocked India in the ICC Champions Trophy in June when they chased down 322 runs to beat the high-flying side in the group stages. However, the growing injury list with every game in this series has been a huge hindrance in that sort of result.

Mathews said, “When you don't have the best eleven in the park that really affects you. Some of those guys are definitely impactful players and we miss them big time."

Sri Lanka are already missing Asela Gunaratne with a shoulder injury, Dinesh Chandimal with a fractured thumb and Chamara Kapugedera with a back injury. They will get a huge boost ahead of the final ODI in the return of Upul Tharanga, who had been serving suspension for slow over-rate.
