IPL 2018 | BCCI has come out with a new signal for strategic time-out sessions for IPL
In a two-day workshop for IPL umpires and match referees, BCCI has come out with a new signal for the strategic time-out sessions instead of the earlier signal which was a 'T' with help of both the hands. BCCI has also given training to the Indian umpires on how to handle the newly introduced DRS.
The eleventh edition of tournament would see many new introductions to the game with the latest one being the official signal for the strategic time-out session. Starting on April 7, the match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings would have umpires showing their wristwatch area with raised hands to indicate time-out sessions.
In a two-day workshop of IPL umpires and match referees, the BCCI came out with a new signal for strategic time-out sessions. They have opted to discontinue the signal of showing a 'T-shape’ with the help of both hands which would clash with signal for the decision review system (DRS).
"Because it is happening for the first time in IPL, the Indian umpires are also given an introductory course. Although, most of the umpires are aware of DRS, but this workshop is to ensure that the umpires are up for it," said a source, reported TOI.
Each time-out session lasts for two-and-a-half minutes for each team in an innings. The bowling side is allowed to request for a break between the sixth and ninth over while the batting team can opt for the same anytime between the 13th and 16th over. In all, there are a total of four time-outs in an IPL match.
BCCI sources also revealed that around 15 Indian umpires, along with four referees, attended the BCCI training session held for match officials. Right from Javagal Srinath, Manu Nayyar, ICC umpires coach Dennis Burns, Anil Chaudhary, Nandan, C Shamshuddin and Nitin Menon discussed stuff such as handling match issues and new changes in the game. The Indian officials were also given brief training in how to operate DRS.
