Just have to tweak few things and results will come, believes Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has stated that Team India is highly competitive and certain changes will surely bring better results. The Indian skipper also stated that winning is the only thing that matters to him. He mentioned that he had to cope with heavy criticism for his decisions in players’ selection.
Despite bottling at the last moment and maintaining their dismal record at Edgbaston, the Indian team gave a strong contest to the hosts and Kohli rightly pointed that out stating that India were not too far away from success. He also said that they are a good competitive side in this season with good players and it won't be long before the side started to win things.
“It's not like we're getting rolled over or dominated. We are being competitive in any Test match that we are playing and that is something people are overlooking very easily. It's just a matter of tweaking a few things here and there and when the results come, they will realize how competitive this team is,” Kohli said, reported TOI.
Kohli’s hard-fought 200 runs in the two innings in Edgbaston went in vain last week as Indian eventually succumbed to a narrow 31-run defeat to trail in the five-match Test series 1-0. However, Kohli hasn’t been new to such outcomes. Taking the reins of the cricket team after MS Dhoni decided to hang his boots back in 2014, Kohli has hit 15 centuries as skipper and like the Adelaide one in 2014, some of his tons didn’t amount to much because the rest of the team failed.
With the Indian fans lamenting Kohli’s wasteful century and blaming the other batsmen, the skipper has come out and stated that scoring such beautiful knocks and yet not winning games for the country is painful, but winning has always been the first priority for him.
“It's not that I feel bad that I got runs and we couldn't get across the line. It's purely that we haven't won games. If I hadn't got the runs and we won the game, I would have a totally different feeling. It doesn't matter whether I get the runs or somebody else. The only thing that matters is India crossing the line,” Kohli said to the TOI.
Kohli also spoke about the heavy criticism that he has been facing for the decisions that he took for the team, like dropping players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Kuldeep Yadav in the first Test at Edgbaston.
“I’m doing as much as I can as a captain and there is constant feedback from the management. People have their own way of looking at the game and have their own ideas when it comes to captaincy. But I feel I have a really good communication with all the players of the team. I definitely leave no stone unturned when it comes to getting in there and talking to the guys wherever I can from the strategy point of view. Sometimes it doesn't come off and it looks like we're just about there,” Kohli concluded.
