IPL | Gary Kirsten appointed as new Head Coach of RCB
Gary Kirsten has been appointed as the head coach and mentor of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after being the batting coach for the same team since last one year. The South African has replaced Daniel Vettori who had been initially a player and then head coach of RCB for as many as eight years.
Gary Kirsten's records speak brilliantly of his consistency. It was under his coaching from 2008 to 2011 that team India, not only topped the Test rankings but also lifted the 2011 World Cup. After that, he went to South Africa to coach his home team and his coaching led the African nation to the top of the Test rankings as well.
Kirsten has also worked for the IPL as a coach of Delhi Daredevils for two seasons, in 2014 and 2015, but couldn't win any title with the team. He was the coach of Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash league 2017.
RCB chairman, Sanjeev Churiwala has stated that Gary Kirsten has always been a great mentor and they're glad to have him as the head coach.
“During the last IPL season, Gary has proved to be a brilliant mentor to both seasoned and young RCB players and we are confident that he will bring a fresh perspective to the team,” Churiwala said in a press release.
The South African was appointed as RCB's batting coach ahead of the 2018 season and his elevation to the Head Coach position was endorsed by none other than Virat Kohli. The challenge is massive for the duo this time around and Kirsten is also determined to end the team's trophyless season.
"I had the privilege of coaching with the RCB team last season under head coach Daniel Vettori and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I look forward to continuing the journey with RCB and doing my best to help the franchise reach its potential. I want to thank the team management for considering me in a leadership position with the franchise and I look forward to a successful few years," Kirsten said.
