BCCI to await match referee’s report before commenting on Mushtaq Ali controversy
BCCI is waiting for the match referee’s report on the controversy that took place in the T20 tie involving the Hyderabad and Karnataka teams in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. BCCI will refer to its Code of Conduct before taking any action against the teams and players that were involved in the issue.
On Thursday, Karnataka edged out Hyderabad in the domestic T20 league tie by two runs. The two runs were the same runs that were controversially awarded due to an umpiring failure that saw the official miss out on a boundary that Karnataka had scored. The incident happened when Karnataka opener Karun Nair flicked a delivery off Mohammed Siraj’s over to the mid-wicket and picked up 2 runs. Mehdi Hassan, the fielder, ran towards the ball and picked it up before it could cross the ropes. However, replays clearly showed that he had stepped on the boundary, but umpire Ulhas Gandhe didn't bother to go upstairs for a video replay, with Karnataka ending their innings on 203/5.
Karnataka had notified the third umpire of the fielding faux immediately after the replays were shown on the television. The third umpire, in turn, had relayed the information to the on-field umpires and it was decided that two runs would be added to Karnataka's total. However, it did not happen immediately after the incident due to some miscommunication between the on-field umpires and the scorers and was only added before the start of the second innings which set a new target for 206 runs for the Hyderabad innings.
This new target agitated the Hyderabad captain Ambati Rayudu along with his teammates as they were asked to wait for the new target to be set on the scoreboard which was accompanied by lots of protests from the team batting second. Hyderabad eventually ended up losing the game by the same two runs which were earlier added to the Karnataka's team total at the start of the second innings.
BCCI took to its twitter saying, "The BCCI has taken cognizance of the events that unfolded during and after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match today between Hyderabad and Karnataka. An official report by the match referee is awaited, following which appropriate action as per BCCI's Code of Conduct will be taken."
