It all started when a Reddit user stumbled upon James Anderson’s mysterious nickname, “Burnley Lara” that led other users to unearth some of the funniest nicknames in cricketing history. It was interesting to observe that most players’ names came up not for their strengths but idiosyncrasies.

Anderson got his name after the English pace bowler had gone 54 Test innings before he was first dismissed for a duck and then had cemented a mind-blowing last-wicket stand of 198 with Joe Root to beat India in 2014. His 81-run-kock was also the highest by an England number 11 then.

While Anderson had got his unusual nickname for his batting prowess, Indian skipper Virat Kohli had his for his bowling skills. “Koach for Kohli. Interesting how this came about: After Kohli bowled the last over in the t20 world cup semi-final against WI, bowling legend Kemar Roach commented that Kohli's fiery off cutters reminded him of his young self. He even gifted Kohli the match with his signature. From that day on people have been equating Kohli to Roach, Kohli+Roach=Koach,” stated Reddit user drassaultrifle.

However, not every player was nicknamed based on their rare qualities but for their name’s pronunciation as well. The best example would former Australian player Mark Waugh, who was nicknamed Afghanistan. If you are wondering how they are linked at all, user gIuck pointed out because it was because of the “Forgotten War” with War playing a pun on Waugh in reference to his more popular twin.

While some are funny like that of England’s Phil Tufnell, who british_heretic pointed out was nicknamed as Phil “The Cat” Tufnell for “his ability to be found sleeping in the dressing room” every now and then, there were some creepy ones too, like Michael Holding, who lolyou22 reminded, was named “Whispering Death” for his quiet approach to the bowling crease.

Apart from them the thread also had some funny names like Hairy Nipples for New Zealand’s Henry Nicholes, Anil “Jumbo” Kumble, who got the nickname courtesy of Navjot Singh Sidhu who had called him a Jumbo jet, Joel "Big Bird" Garner, Glen "pigeon" Mcgrath, Parmesan Tony, and Paul Collingwood's 'Brigadier Block'.
