Sameer Dighe steps down from the position of Mumbai coach

After a disappointing Ranji campaign with Mumbai, former India stumper Sameer Dighe has decided to resign from the role of Mumbai’s head coach. About a week ago, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had asked all the state coaches and selectors whether they were interested in continuing in their posts.

The 2017-18 domestic season was one to forget for Mumbai, where they were beaten in the quarterfinals of both the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy while losing three of their four matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s. The manner of the defeat in the Ranji quarters was terrible to say the least as Karnataka got the better of them by a huge margin of an innings and 20 runs in Nagpur.

The lackluster performance left MCA's Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC), which is headed by former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar, in a lurch who had to chalk out the future plans. Agarkar had asked all the state coaches and selectors whether they were interested in continuing in their posts, and in the wake of it, Dighe, who played six Tests and 23 ODIs between 2001-02 and had replaced another former India wicketkeeper Chandrakant Pandit as the coach at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, decided to step down from the role.

"He got back to us today, saying that he's quitting due to family reasons. His parents aren't keeping well," MCA joint secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar told TOI.
