Ind vs Aus | It would be silly to copy Nathan Lyon, says Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin has stated that having followed one technique for a long period now, it would be silly to change that at this stage of his career and added he doesn't need to copy Nathan Lyon. In the recent matches, Ashwin has been criticised for not changing his approach in foreign conditions.

Australian spinner Nathan Lyon and his Indian counterpart Ravichandran Ashwin have the same skill- off-spin. But, the methods they apply for the same are different. Lyon is more of a ripper of the cricket ball who depends on the overspin and the dip to catch his fishes but Ashwin is starkly different in which he chooses more to rely on his variations and the side spin.

"It's going to be very hard to replicate one's action. We are talking about actions and biomechanics here, and it's quite silly when people say, oh, it's overspin and sidespin and stuff like that. You've got to still stick to your strengths. You're not going to ask Ishant Sharma to bowl like Philander, can you? It's not going to happen.

The lead Indian spinner also stated that it is not as easy to change one's bowling technique as people believe it to be. Ashwin also commended Lyon for his performance in last few years stating that the former could learn a thing or two from the latter.

"I think he's done really well over the last couple of years and he's bowling really well, the ball's coming out really well. What can I learn [from Lyon]? Probably just drop the ball in the right spots and probably as the series goes on look forward to a good competition."

Hence he asserted that one has to have faith in his/her strengths and continue doing the right things.

"You've got to believe in your strengths. Something's got me 350-odd wickets in my Test career, something's got him 300-odd wickets in his career. It's important to keep going the same way and learn a few things on the way."

The four-match Test series between Australia and India is to begin from December 6th and the Indian team is currently playing a practice match to be ready for the Test series. On the third day of the four-day practice match, the Indian bowlers struggled to grab the all ten wickets of the opposition with Ashwin coming out as the most economical bowler.

"I thought the ball came out pretty well," he said. "Haven't played an international game for a while so it felt good the way it came out. Obviously the next 4-5 days I will prep up a bit more for the [first Test in Adelaide]."
