It would be terrific for England cricket to tap in Cook as a resource, says Ed Smith
As Alastair Cook announced his retirement from the international cricket, England selector Ed Smith has stated that it would be a great opportunity for the country to use his experience in developing England Cricket. Smith also revealed that Cook would continue to play for Essex for the time being.
Early in the week, Alastair Cook had announced that he will withdraw from the international cricket after the fifth Test against India at the Oval. Having sealed the series already, the Oval Test is nothing more than a dead rubber and would be perfect way for Cook to bow out with an easy knock.
Ed Smith has mentioned that as an England selector, he would like to utilize Cook's experience and knowledge of cricket to further develop the cricket on the national side.
“I'm not sure about what he wants to do - he's going to play for Essex for a while. He may just look at his options. I think it would be terrific for England cricket to tap into him as a resource. I've had the odd chat with him about bowlers and batters this summer but next year maybe we'll have something a bit more formal where he comes and really advises,” Smith told BBC Radio.
Alastair Cook has been a remarkable Test player in his Cricket career. He has registered 12,325 runs in the total 160 Test matches played, with a batting average of 44.8. He has struck 32 centuries in the Test format while having 56 half-centuries as well. Though Smith didn't mention in what way he would be involved, he did express his desire to get him.
“He's had so many games as captain, a record there, as a player he's the record run-scorer in history, and he's a calm, balanced and fair person, so I think we've got to try to tap into that knowledge and wisdom without a doubt. It doesn't have to be necessarily that structured but someone people know they can talk to as a trusted advisor,” Smith added.
