VIDEO | Massive confusion ensues as umpire confuses no-ball for dead ball

It’s hard to remember a match in recent history between India and Bangladesh where controversy hasn’t played a role. While Friday’s match hadn’t seen any controversy between the teams till then, it was the umpire who came up with one after calling a dead-ball which should ideally be a no-ball.

Ravindra Jadeja’s inclusion in place of Hardik Pandya had raised some eyebrows after the all-rounder was called at the very last moment to fill in the void. However, the Chennai Super Kings player looked ready for the job despite minimum rest and not playing any game whatsoever in the group stage.

He started off in a rusty manner as expected overstepping the crease by quite a big margin on his second ball, something very uncharacteristic of the slow left-armer. However, it was his next ball that was supposed to be a free-hit, created the confusion. Apparently, Jadeja was very quick to bowl the next ball while Rohit Sharma was still setting his field.

Pakistan umpire Ahsan Raza called it as a dead ball. A concerned skipper, Rohit was seen rushing to the umpire and asking “Why dead ball?” Given Shakib-al-Hasan could only manage a single in the supposed to be free-hit, which was bowled full toss by Jadeja, it was only natural for Rohit Sharma to ask.

Later, it was found that India had kept more than two fielders outside the circle in the 10th over, which isn’t allowed in power play 1. Such circumstances need to be punished by a no-ball and not a dead ball. The game was stopped for some time with players and umpires discussing at the centre of the filed before the game paused. Shakib hit the free hit for a boundary this time.
