Reports | Virat Kohli might undergo yo-yo test to prove his fitness for West Indies series
Virat Kohli may need to prove that he is fit enough to lead the Indian team by taking yo-yo test ahead of the upcoming Test series against West Indies which is slated to start on October 4. Kohli was rested for the ongoing Asia Cup as he had some concerns ever since the end of this year’s IPL.
Virat Kohli endured a disappointing end to the Test series against England which saw the visitors lose by a margin of 4-1. Although it was a dismal result for the Indian team, Kohli ended the series as the highest run-getter between both teams. The Indian skipper moved to number one in the ICC Test rankings list for batsmen as well after displacing Steven Smith.
He was rested for the Asia Cup campaign as Rohit Sharma took charge of the Indian team in Kohli’s absence. BCCI selectors declared that they wanted to rest the 29-year old in order to prevent a burn-out as India have a busy season up ahead.
Now, reports have emerged that Kohli will have to undergo a yo-yo test to prove his fitness if he wished to feature in the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies which will start on October 4.
According to a report in Navbharat Times, the test will take place on September 28, after which the selectors will name the Test squad for the series. The yo-yo test has been made mandatory by the BCCI and all the players have to go through the process before selection. In the past, players like Ambati Rayudu, Mohammed Shami, Sanju Samson have missed out on selection after they have failed the test. Chief coach - Ravi Shastri, had earlier claimed that there can be no leniency as far as fitness standards are concerned. An Indian player has to score 16.1 in the test in order to be considered fit for selection for the national team.
During the series against England, Kohli spoke about his fitness problems which flared up again in during the second Test at Lord’s.
“Yesterday and today, it wasn’t great. The back can be very tricky when it goes off. It happened in the latter half or the last leg of the South Africa tour when I missed a T20 game. That was very sudden, it happened a day before (the game),” Kohli told reporters after India crashed to defeat against England by an innings and 159 runs.
The Test series between India and West Indies will begin on October 4 in Rajkot. The second Test is scheduled to be played in Hyderabad from October 12. The Test series will be followed by a five-match one-day series and three-match T20I series.
