IPL 2019 | Tried to become best father and husband during ban period, says David Warner
David Warner has stated that he tried hard to become the best father and husband during his 12 month ban period, and even took time off from the game. Barring a few games in club cricket and in the Bangladesh Premier League, the Indian Premier League was his first major tournament after return.
David Warner, along with Steve Smith, was banned for a period of 12 months due to his involvement in the ball tampering saga in South Africa. However, he made a roaring return by smashing a century for his club and then even became the highest run scorer for his side in the Bangladesh Premier League. But that did not last long as he had to return to Australia due to an elbow injury. This meant that the Indian Premier League would be his first major tournament on return.
The southpaw has had a consistent run in the league, and thereby, is the highest run getter at the moment. He feels that spending time with his family during the ban period has worked wonders for him.
“I have had time off to work harder at my game. Put the bat down for 16-18 weeks and just worked hard on being the best father and husband, that has worked for me. Yeah, I try to be the funny man in the team, the prankster,” said Warner at the post-match presentation ceremony, reported Hindustan Times
Warner has notched up 692 runs in 12 innings at a staggering strike rate and average of 143.86 and 69.20 respectively. With eight fifties and one hundred, the World Cup bound player has been the highest run getter by a distance. Nevertheless, with the 81 runs innings against Kings XI Punjab being his last one, he did not fail to thank the groundsmen.
“It’s obviously great to get out there and do your job properly. We’ve got a great deck to bat on. The ground staff have worked tirelessly to prepare good wickets and then it’s about going back to basics and backing your instincts,” expressed the 32 year old.
Australia are the defending champions for the quadrennial event starting May 30. Warner will play his first game for Australia in over a year and was hopeful that the conditions will suit the batsmen.
“This World Cup, you’ll see some high scores. Hopefully the ball doesn’t swing as much. Obviously England are the home team and they’re great. We’re world champions. I’m sure it’ll be great,” the former Australia vice captain said.
“I think it just goes back to being still as a batsman. I get the tendency to moving around a bit if there have been a few dots. But I have worked hard over the last few months. The game plan is to back yourself, just back your natural game.” he added.
Warner finished off his campaign with a match-winning knock, ensuring that Sunrisers Hyderabad are still alive for the playoffs with a 45 run win over KXIP.
