Soft-signal debate is showing no signs of ending anytime soon and in Bengaluru, one more chapter added to the controversial ICC rule. While Shikhar Dhawan would find himself as unfortunate for his dismissal due to the same rule, Jason Behrendorff consoles him with an “it happens” gesture.

On the second delivery of the 10th over, Behrendorff bowled a good length ball on the stumps which held its line to which Dhawan decided to heave it away. With the ball stopping mid-way from one end, it took a bit of time to reach him and as a result, the face of the bat twisted and he failed to time it perfectly.

However, the ball still took an aerial route and Marcus Stoinis, who was fielding at deep cover, came charging down to take it and was successful in doing so. Stoinis instantly started celebrating the dismissal, but the umpire asked Dhawan to stay back as he wanted to check the replays. After referring the decision to the third umpire, Nandan gave the soft signal as out and it needed conclusive evidence for the third umpire Nitin Menon to reverse the dismissal.

On the first view on the replay, it seemed like the ball had bounced off the surface before finding shelter in Stoinis’ hands. However, that one angle was missing from which the third umpire could reverse the on-field umpire’s decision, and as that was absent, Menon stood with Nandan’s decision which means Dhawan had to go back.

The southpaw was indeed disappointed by that and as he was returning back to the pavilion, Behrendorff had a facial gesture that suggested he was telling Dhawan that “it happens” on a cricket field and he shouldn’t be disappointed by that.
