VIDEO | Steve Smith declared out in controversial manner after “RTS-less, Hotspot-less” DRS drama

If the David Warner run-out fiasco was not enough to give Bangladesh Premier League the worst possible start, then Steve Smith dismissal added another bad chapter to it. Smith was declared out by the third umpire on DRS appeal despite no Real Time Snicko or Hotspot available to back that up.

While a terrible umpiring blunder in the BPL yesterday denied David Warner a good start to his redemption in top-level cricket, Steve Smith had to endure one such blunder in the same game as the third umpire declared him out despite not having any conclusive proof to back that up.

The incident in question took place in the 9th over of the innings when an Al-Amin delivery landed on the good length and swung away a touch outside off to which the former Australian skipper tried to steer it off the face. However, the ball took the outside edge of the bat and Al-Amin started appealing for it in which the umpire was clearly not interested.

Al-Amin and wicket-keeper Liton Das was surprised by that and went for the DRS straight-away even without discussing with their skipper David Warner. While that showed their confidence, what happened in the replays surprised all and sundry watching the game. Umpire went with his intuition as there was no Hotspot or Real Time Snicko available for the DRS replay.

The only reason that the third umpire had while checking the replays that the ball had deviated a bit from the bat, but he wasn’t sure about the contact. But the lack of Snicko and Hotspot means he was helpless anyway. He gave Smith out to end his return to top-flight cricket a terrible affair.
