ICC World Cup 2019 | It’s our best chance of going further in the tournament, says Gary Stead

Gary Stead is of the belief that New Zealand have the best chance of going further in the World Cup if they can produce a collective performance in the semi-finals. Stead wants New Zealand, who are set to play either Australia or India next in the tournament, to forget the three successive losses.

New Zealand have always been consistent performers at the World Cup. So advancing through to the semi-finals for the eighth time doesn’t surprise anyone. But, their recent dip in form is a worry for their fans. Having stormed ahead in the league phase, winning five of their first six games (the other one against India was abandoned due to rain), the Kiwis faltered at the end. Three comprehensive defeats at the hands of Pakistan, Australia and England meant they were the least favourite for the semifinals. However, the head coach reassured the supporters by remaining confident in his team’s ability.

"Our first goal was to make the semi-finals and we're pretty sure we're going to be there now so that in itself is a really good thing. As long as we as a team can perform collectively well then that's our best chance of going further in the tournament," Stead told Reuters.

Quite obviously, New Zealand’s major problems have stemmed from their misfiring batsmen. Apart from skipper Kane Williamson, no one has shown any sign of consistency or confidence in the middle. Although Stead acknowledged this fault in his players, he sympathises with them at a human level.

"There are some individuals who obviously aren't getting the runs and wickets that they want to. But cricket is a harsh game and we all know that you're not going to be perfect every day,” Stead said.

"We know from the opening position spot those guys have had a tough tournament. (But) Martin Guptill can go out there and we know he's capable of getting a double hundred. He could do that in the semi-final and all of a sudden we won't be talking about form."

Whether the Kiwis will play India (13 points) or Australia (14 points) at Old Trafford on Tuesday is still to be decided. Both the teams, who have only lost once in the tournament, have a game left to play on Saturday. The coach said he fully understood the level of difficulty they will be facing but said that he remains positive of their chances.

"We are under no illusions. It will be a tough tough game of cricket but if we can fire a few shots and play at the best of our ability, then I think we're a real chance," Stead added.
