ICC World Cup 2019 | The tournament is going at 280-300, but we will try to score 500, says Sarfaraz Ahmed
Sarfaraz Ahmed refused to give up his team’s chances of making it to the semifinals of the World Cup, saying his team will try to score 500 runs against Bangladesh. Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying rest solely on a mathematical possibility if they bat first and win by a 300-plus margin.
The highly optimistic Pakistan skipper said at the pre-match press conference of the match against Bangladesh that his boys are ready to do the impossible against Bangladesh on Friday.
After England’s wins over India and New Zealand, Pakistan are left with a herculean task to make it to the World Cup semifinals. Provided they bat first, Pakistan would need a margin of 321 runs to win. It is mathematically possible, and so, Sarfaraz & Co. will give it a shot.
“We will give it our best but we have to be realistic. If we make 400 runs, we can surely hope that the opposition team can get out on 50. We will try our best. It is not a hidden fact that we have to make 500 runs and win by a margin of 316 runs. We have to be realistic but we will try our best,” Sarfaraz said at the pre-match press conference, reported the Quint.
Although ODIs in England have regularly seen teams score in excess of 350, and several times over 400, that has not been the case at this World Cup so far. Teams have consistently found 280-300 to be a winning total. Sarfaraz admitted this but is hoping for a miracle from the heavens.
“The first objective ofcourse, is to win the match, finish on a high note. Further, if Allah has written out something for us, then definitely it will happen. We will obviously try, give it our all. But realistically speaking, this tournament is going at the 280-300 run mark,” Sarfaraz added.
Barring this one of the most ridiculous games in the history of ODI cricket, Pakistan will not make the semi-finals of this World Cup. They play Bangladesh at Lord’s on Friday, who are looking to win only their fourth game at a World Cup for the first time.
However, Ahmed was also asked a somewhat controversial question as how if Pakistan's "downfall" had started after the ICC 2017 Champions Trophy as they were ousted in the Asia Cup before they went on to lose series against Australia, England, and New Zealand as well. However, a disgusted Pakistan skipper could just avoid it.
Question: Did Pakistan's downfall start after the Champions Trophy win?
