A senior member of India’s World Cup squad has come under question for violating the ‘family’ clause after his wife stayed with him longer than the allowed time frame as stipulated by the BCCI. The player had earlier made a request for the same but it had been rejected by the Board and CoA.
The BCCI under the CoA had stipulated in advance that a player’s family will not be allowed to stay with him for more than 15 days during the World Cup unless permission for the same is sought from the necessary officials.
The matter had been made clearer in the CoA’s meeting on May 21, the minutes of which stated that the committee had discussed whether the permission for the same shall need to be taken from the Board or the captain and coach. Since it is a non-cricketing matter and the BCCI has traditionally been in-charge of making such decisions, the Board should ideally decide on any such matters.
The discussion had taken place after a senior player had requested his wife to stay with for an extended period in England while the mega event was on. In a meeting on May 3, the CoA had categorically denied the request and the same had been published in its minutes.
However, fresh reports state that the cricketer had disregarded thee decision and his wife had stayed with him for the entire seven weeks of the tournament, from which India were eliminated in the semifinals.
“Yes, the same player in question, who was categorically denied permission during May 3 meeting, violated the 15-day rule during the World Cup. The question that arises here is whether the player in question had sought permission about the extra duration of stay of his wife from the competent authorities, in this case the coach and the captain. The answer is no," a BCCI official was reported saying to the PTI by TOI.
The CoA is yet to receive an official report against the player but questions have now been raised on the team’s administrative manager Sunil Subramaniam. It was his lookout to ensure that proper arrangements were made and no such violation incidents occurred.
"What was Sunil Subramaniam doing? His job is not to monitor team's training sessions The coach captain and other support staff are there to oversee the arrangement. Hopefully, the CoA will take cognisance of the matter and seek a report from the manager,” another senior BCCI official said.
