ICC World Cup 2019 | Lungi Ngidi to miss out game against India due to injury
South Africa's team doctor Mohammed Moosajee has revealed that Lungi Ngidi will not play in their next game against India because of an injury. Ngidi gave away 35 runs in four overs against Bangladesh but failed to return to bowl after limping off the field as he had suffered a hamstring strain.
The South African team has had its fair share of injuries in this World Cup with Hashim Amla and Dale Styen being injured. Lungi Ngidi, who had suffered a hamstring strain after bowling just four overs against Bangladesh, is the latest player to join the list. The team doctor Mohammed Moosajee has revealed that the young pacer might be sidelined for 10 days which means that he will not feature in the game against India on June 5.
“Ngidi sustained sharp discomfort in his left hamstring. We decided he had a hamstring strain. He will be out for week to 10 days. He will have a scan tomorrow (Monday). We hope he can be ready for the West Indies match (on June 10),” he told reporters, reported AFP.
South Africa’s Hashim Amla was hit on the helmet by England pacer Jofra Archer and was retired hurt after playing eight balls in the opening encounter of the World Cup on May 30. He did return to bat despite concussion-like symptoms but could not help his side overcome the defeat.
The 31-year-old was rested in the game against Bangladesh on Sunday as a precautionary measure but is set to play on Wednesday, as revealed by the team manager cum doctor.
“The concussion assessments were done on Thursday and initially the results were inconclusive. Then the next test showed he (Amla) could bat.
“Subsequent to the match, the next day he felt some symptoms, so as a precaution we decided to rest him for this game. The plan is to have him ready for the game against India in Southampton,” Moosajee added.
