ICC World Cup 2019 | Australia to make final decision on Marcus Stoinis after Bangladesh clash
Aaron Finch has revealed that Justin Langer and the rest of the management staff will take a final call on Marcus Stoinis involvement in the ongoing World Cup after the match against Bangladesh. The all-rounder suffered a side strain which is preventing him from bowling in the World Cup.
Australia finds themselves third on the table behind hosts England at the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 after winning three matches of the four they’ve played so far. India, who are ranked one spot below at fourth, are the only team to have beaten the defending champions at this year’s global showpiece.
The 2015 WC winners are faced with a dilemma after explosive all-rounder Marcus Stoinis picked up a side strain in the recent win against Pakistan. Stoinis, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL earlier this year, will face a final fitness reviewal ahead of the match against Bangladesh on June 20.
Aussie skipper Aaron Finch reckons that back-up Mitchell Marsh will do what needs to be done in the absence of the hard-hitting Stoinis from the Australian starting line-up.
"Yeah, that's why he's here ... but as a bit of a precaution more than anything, if Stoinis doesn't recover well enough over the next couple of days. There is confidence that Mitch will come in and do well if selected, if Stoinis doesn't recover properly," Finch said as per PTI sources.
The Australian opener further added that he is not sure whether the team will go ahead with a bowling or batting all-rounder in the unpredictable English conditions.
"Yeah, it's tough when guys, especially all-rounders who balance out your side really well and give you that extra fast-bowling option, as well as a top six batter, (are out). So it's a little bit difficult trying to decide whether you go the extra batter or the extra bowler, depending on conditions.
"So I think it does make it a little bit tougher, a bit more of a challenge, no doubt. But we also did plan for that, if it did happen throughout the tournament. So it wasn't a total surprise. Obviously, it's not ideal, but it's not a surprise to us because we had already thought about things like that. But just game to game, it totally changes depending on the conditions," Finch said.
