ICC World Cup 2019 | I don’t mean to go out there and bat slow, says David Warner
Despite being the top scorer at the World Cup, David Warner has faced criticism for his slow approach in building each innings. In answering his critics, Warner admits that he has picked out the fielders a little too often but stood his ground on pacing his innings according to conditions.
Back in the IPL after a year, David Warner looked in an ominous form. The southpaw smashed 692 runs from just 12 matches before joining the Australian camp to prepare for the World Cup. But in England, things have been slightly different for Warner. Although he has kept getting runs - 447 so far from six matches - a lot has been made on the way he has paced his innings. The opener admitted to being frustrated at times, but commends bowlers for keeping it tight against him.
“I don't mean to go out there and bat slow. It gets a bit frustrating because you sort of middle one and it goes sort of full pace to the fielder and you can’t even get off strike. I got frustrated against India. I got frustrated against Afghanistan. And then today, Finchy kept telling me to hang in there and bat deep and bat time. It's generally not my game to stick there -- and I usually try and go after it a little bit or come down the wicket or something. But must be a bit more maturity, I think," Warner said after the game against Bangladesh, reported Scroll.
Shrugging off any injury concerns, Warner emphasized that he was only trying to adapt fluently to the conditions. He also admits that the year off from cricket has helped him rediscover his game.
“I feel a lot fresher. I've worked hard on my own fitness -- take your mind away from the game. You just let your mind be at ease. And to have time at home as well with my family was awesome and I really enjoyed that,” Warner added.
After notching up his 16th ODI century, Warner is now level with Adam Gilchrist. The left-handed opener has said that being in the same sentence as Gilchrist was ‘fantastic’ and ‘overwhelming’ as well.
