ICC World Cup 2019 | Jason Roy’s comeback delayed, won’t play against Australia

England opener Jason Roy has not been able to recover completely from the injury he sustained against the West Indies and will have to spend another game watching on from the sidelines. Stand in opener James Vince is expected to start despite his poor run of form in recent matches.

After having been injured against West Indies while chasing a ball racing towards the boundary, Jason Roy was immediately taken off the field. He did not return to bat in the second innings as Joe Root opened in his place. Scans later showed Roy had sustained a torn hamstring in his left leg.

The unfortunate blow has already seen him miss a comfortable win against Afghanistan and the loss to Sri Lanka. Initially expected to return for the match against Australia at Lord’s scheduled for tomorrow, Roy had a scan at the Fortius Clinic in London on Monday morning. The results showed that there has been a definite improvement but he is not yet fit enough to play a complete match, reported Cricbuzz.

However, the batsman was seen batting in the nets and training with the squad after his scan in order to recover in time for the team’s next match against high flying India.

Hampshire captain James Vince has opened both the games in Roy’s absence but has failed to make much of an impact having scored just a combined 40 runs in the two matches. However, it is expected that he will be given another chance against Australia to open the innings along with Jonny Bairstow.
