Shreyas Iyer has come out and said that he was disappointed after being dropped from India's limited-overs team after the ODI series win against South Africa in 2018. The 24-year old added that a strong showing in the IPL will improve his chances of getting back into the national setup.

Delhi Capitals’ young skipper, Shreyas Iyer, did a decent job towards the latter half of last year’s Indian Premier League season after a dismal start saw Gautam Gambhir resign as club captain. However, The Indian youngster could not prevent his side from finishing bottom of the table at the end of the competition.

With the national team, Shreyas has done well with scores of 9, 88, 65, 18 and 30 in the five innings that he got a chance to bat in. In addition to that, an average of 42 and a strike rate of 96.33 was decent enough from the Mumbai batsman to secure a bench role in the team. However, the last innings against South Africa in Port Elizabeth proved to be his final one with the national team.

In a recent interview with TOI, the 23-year old revealed that he was not given enough chances to prove his credentials at the highest level.

"Yeah, I felt that way. If there was some other player in place of me, he would have also felt disappointed. Your eventual goal is to play for your country. I was disappointed when I was dropped and didn't get fair enough chances. But when you look at the TV and see your team winning, it gives a lot of satisfaction. That is more important,"" Shreyas told TOI.

Iyer, who has a first class average of 52.19, reckons a strong outing with the Delhi-based franchise in this year’s IPL tournament will help him earn the national call-up in the near future.

"I am doing really well in every tournament. I am enjoying my cricket and not thinking about the selection process. Selection is not in my hands. My job is to perform and I'm doing that. Anything can happen (in the future), you can get a random call from the selectors that you've been selected for the World Cup.

"I have been doing really well in all the formats. And, if I perform in the IPL, then they (selectors) will have to think twice about me.Recently, Gagan Khoda came up to me and said I've been playing very well lately. He asked me to maintain consistency and I'll definitely get my chance."
