Faf du Plessis is of the opinion that bowlers will play an important role in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 as South Africa gear up to prove their doubters wrong at the global showpiece. Du Plessis admits that history is against his team but hopes that his young side will come through in England.

South Africa will enter the ICC World Cup 2019 as outside contenders to cause an upset to the favorites of the tournament. Led by Faf du Plessis, the Proteas will bank on their senior players like Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla and others. However, the CSK batsman is adamant that this year’s World Cup will be different as compared to the ones before.

The 34-year old batsman reckons that bowlers could play an important role in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 which starts in five days.

“I think bowlers will win this tournament,” he said. “Batters will score runs on good wickets, so the team towards the end will be the team that will have done well with the ball — teams that can take wickets on flat pitches,” Du Plessis said as per AFP sources.

South Africa have a tendency to crumble in international tournaments on the big stage which is unfortunately earned them the unwanted tag of ‘chokers’. The Proteas have always put together strong teams at World Cup tournaments but somehow they have never been able to make the final in any of the previous editions of the tournament.

However, Du Plessis reckons this time could be different for his young squad. The veteran Proteas player backed his players to make the most of the opportunities that come their way in the coming weeks.

“You can’t control history — I am a firm believer in that All you can try and focus on is what is ahead. If you are good enough on the day then great, but if the opposition are better on the day then that’s OK.

“The squad that we have here compared to previous tournaments are a lot younger and with those new faces comes exciting opportunities," Du Plessis added.
