ICC World Cup 2019 | Tamim Iqbal suffers injury blow during a practice session
Bangladesh veteran batsman Tamim Iqbal injured his left wrist in training on Tuesday and may miss his team’s World Cup opener against South Africa on Sunday. He is the latest addition to a long list of injured players in the Bangladesh camp, which would surely affect the team’s morale.
Having one of the most capped squads in the tournament, Bangladesh was banking on the experience of its senior players to go far in the tournament. However, every day there is news of a new setback, with the number of injured players simply piling up. It was no different on Friday, as opening batsman Tamim Iqbal sustained an injury in the nets and was immediately taken to the team’s physio.
"It's too early to say anything specific but we will have an x-ray and if there is a fracture, then he won't be available (for the match against South Africa). But if that is not the case, then we can hope he will be available for the opening game," selector Habibul Bashar said following the incident.
He had even missed the game against India after suffering from a thigh strain, the same match in which skipper Mashrafe Mortaza encountered a minor injury of his own, though he has reassured everyone that he will be able to take full part on the second of June.
Shakib Al Hasan has also returned from a couple of long sideline spells, while Mahmudullah’s shoulder is still not fit enough for him to start bowling. Other concerns include Mustafizur Rahman who has a calf injury and Rubel Hossain who is having slight concerns of his own.
With Bangladesh having a serious chance of actually winning the trophy for probably the first time in history, they will be desperate to prove a point despite all the obstacles as they face the Proteas on June 2.
