Afghanistan appoint Andy Moles as Director of Cricket
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed England's Andy Moles as the Director of Cricket, it was confirmed on Wednesday. Moles previously worked as the coach of Afghanistan between 2014 and 2015 and also was the country's interim coach after Phil Simmons' resignation post the World Cup.
Post the disastrous 2019 World Cup, which saw Afghanistan lose all their matches, the ACB promised a revamp to get things back on track and take Afghanistan cricket forward in the right direction. Chief national selector Dawlat Ahmadzai and team manager Naweed Sayem were handed one-year suspensions while Gulbadin Naib was removed from captaincy with Rashid Khan taking over the duties in all three formats.
The move instantly paid dividends by Afghanistan winning their first-ever Test away from home in Bangladesh last month and also sharing the T20I tri-series. Now, in another drastic change, the board has named England's Andy Moles as their Director of Cricket and Chief Selector. Moles worked with the team as the head coach between 2014 to 2015 and also handled the role of being the interim coach post-Phil Simmon's resignation after the dismal 2019 World Cup campaign.
Moles, who played 230 first-class games between 1986 and 1997, will bring plenty of experience and expertise to the table and might turn out to be a valuable coup for the subcontinent nation. His first assignment will be Afghanistan's full-fledged home series against West Indies, which will commence from November 5.
