Former England first-class cricketer Andy Moles has been appointed as the Director of Cricket and Chief Selector of the Afghanistan team. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had recently appointed former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener as head coach till 2020, replacing Phil Simmons.

After the team’s last-place finish in this year’s ICC World Cup in England, the national cricket board moved to make a complete revamp of the backroom staff in the team. Ending Simmons’ 18-month stint, the baton has been handed over to Klusener to lead the team into the T20 World Cup in Australia next year.

Moles, who served as the interim coach of the team during its successful tour of rivals Bangladesh, was rewarded with a position at the helm. During the tour, Afghanistan crushed the Bangladesh side by 224 runs to win the lone Test, before sharing the T20 tri-series trophy, which also included Zimbabwe, with the hosts as the final was abandoned.

“Andy Moles appointed as Director of Cricket and Chief Selector. Moles served as interim head coach of Afghanistan in the recently concluded tour of Bangladesh,” ACB announced via its official Twitter handle, reported PTI.

“He has a vast experience of over 25 years in the sport and is a Level-4 Coach as well,” ACB wrote.
