Ben Stokes takes 'The Sun' to court over controversial story about family’s tragic past
Ben Stokes and his mother Deborah have decided to opt for legal proceedings against British daily ‘The Sun’ about the story that they posted a month ago. The Daily had posted a story about Stokes family’s tragic past and the family has deemed it as offensive and an invasion to their privacy.
In a year where Stokes played a huge part in winning the World Cup for England while also playing one of the best innings ever to hand England a miraculous win at Headingley, the incident brought a sour taste to the proceedings. The Sun about a month ago had posted about the tragic story of the death of members of Stokes’ New Zealand-based family about 30 years ago. This had some sensitive information in it which was exposed to the public, thereby offending Ben Stokes and his family.
Stokes had posted a statement on Twitter criticising ‘The Sun’. He called the paper “utterly disgusting” for publishing a story that touched on “deeply personal and traumatic events”.
The Sun, however, retaliated by saying that there was no invasion of privacy as the same story had got a lot of media coverage in New Zealand.
“The Sun has the utmost sympathy for Ben Stokes and his mother but it is only right to point out the story was told with the co-operation of a family member who supplied details, provided photographs and posed for pictures,” a spokeswoman for the newspaper said.
“The tragedy is also a matter of public record and was the subject of extensive front-page publicity in New Zealand at that time,” she added.
