Will surely try to make comeback in Test cricket, vows Shikhar Dhawan
After being frozen out of the Test setup in 2018, Shikhar Dhawan has vowed to make a comeback in the longest format for Team India. He also admitted that the addition of experienced players such as Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin will only help the Shreyas Iyer-led side this season.
After scores of 3,1 in the fifth Test at the Oval, India’s left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from the Test setup. Prior to his disastrous tour, the southpaw had scored 2315 runs, at an average of 40.61. However, his performance away from home had always been a growing issue for the selectors, who replaced him with Mayank Agarwal.
Since his last Test, the left-hander has appeared for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, where he proved his fitness before being fit for selection in the limited-overs format. However, Dhawan admitted that he still has it in him to force a comeback into the Test setup.
“I am not a part of the Test team but that does not mean I have given up all hopes of a comeback,” Dhawan told TV channels during an interaction.
“Whenever I got an opportunity… like in the Ranji Trophy last year I scored a century, then I made a comeback into the one-day team, if I get an opportunity then why not, of course,” PTI quoted him as saying.
However, the southpaw stated that he just needs to keep performing in the shortest format to make a return to the Indian T20I setup. Rightly so, the left-hander is hopeful of things falling in place ahead of the 2020 season of the IPL.
“The T20 World Cup is there next year, so I need to keep performing, keep myself fit, make runs consistently. If I keep doing these, other things will automatically fall into place.”
“Shreyas led the team pretty well last year, this time Ajinkya has come in, Ashwin has come in, they are quite experienced players and I am sure they are going to share their insights.”
Dhawan would turn up for Delhi Capitals this season and might bat alongside either of Prithvi Shaw or Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the order. The franchise would take on Kings XI Punjab in the second game of the competition, on September 20.
