South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been sidelined for the rest of the series against Sri Lanka and the upcoming matches against Pakistan. The right-arm pacer sustained a groin injury and experienced discomfort while bowling on the fourth day of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

According to Cricket South Africa (CSA), Gerald Coetzee underwent scans that confirmed a strain in his right groin muscle. His recovery is expected to take four to six weeks. South Africa has called up fast bowler Kwena Maphaka in his absence for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha, starting December 5. The Proteas currently lead the two-match series 1-0.

During the fourth day of the first Test, Coetzee bowled intermittently, delivering three overs in his opening spell during the morning session, followed by two in his second spell. In the afternoon session, he bowled three overs and dismissed Dinesh Chandimal. South Africa dominated the first Test in Durban, setting Sri Lanka a challenging target of 516 on a surface that became less responsive as the match progressed. Despite the conditions, the visitors were bowled out for 282.

South Africa is gearing up to host Pakistan for an all-format series, which includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. The series begins on December 10 with the T20Is, followed by the ODIs starting December 17, and concluding with the Tests. Additionally,  Coetzee's injury further adds worry to South Africa's squad situation as Wiaan Mulder has also been ruled out of the second Test, while pacer Nandre Burger is unavailable for the summer. Additionally, Lungi Ngidi is sidelined until January, leaving the Proteas' bowling attack stretched thin.
