T20 World Cup | Twitter reacts as Rohit pleads American cops to go easy on pitch invader

For a sport as geographically limited as cricket, broadening the horizons can pose challenges unimaginable for the players concerned. Rohit Sharma was one such victim of a cultural shock during a warm-up game against Bangladesh after observing the American police's rough handling of an Indian fan.

‌India wrapped their preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in ideal fashion on Saturday with a comfortable 60-run win against Bangladesh at Nassau County in their solitary warm-up game. Rishabh Pant proved to be the star performer with the bat for Rohit Sharma's men en route to a formidable total of 182/5 before six different bowlers chipped in with wickets to restrict the Tigers to 122/9 in their 20 overs. However, not all was smooth sailing for the Men in Blue as the common sight of a pitch invader once again marred proceedings albeit the consequences for the fan turned out to be vastly different than typical.

The incident occurred during the second innings when an Indian supporter donned in blue rushed onto the playing surface and wrapped his arms around Rohit Sharma with the ground security trailing closely behind. However, instead of escorting the fan away as is normal in the subcontinent, the American forces tackled the invader onto the ground and restrained him with handcuffs with the help of excessive force. The Indian skipper, who initially seemed relieved by the intervention, was quickly taken over by agony as he requested the security to go easy on the fan. When his pleading fell on deaf ears, Rohit beckoned a support staff from the dugout to alleviate the situation and ultimately the fan was gently led away from the ground.

Twitterati was quick to note the stark difference in the handling of pitch invaders in the States and commended Rohit for his empathetic demeanour.

It's unfortunate for any batter to fall cheaply at the outset of a World Cup encounter and get another golden opportunity. Such was the case for Sanju Samson during India’s warm-up clash against Bangladesh at Nassau County where he was undone by a masterful in-swinger from Shoriful Islam.
