After coming out to bat in the 16th over, Russell had wasted little time in heaving two balls beyond the fence and looked set to propel his team to a competitive score. Anrich Nortje hit the bullseye with a brilliant throw and Russell was caught short of the crease by the barest margin, leading to the veteran going through all seven stages of grief.

As soon as the stumps were shattered, Russell collapsed to his knees and hung his head in shame with his helmet resting on his willow's handle. Once the replays confirmed his fate, the 36-year-old continued to express disgust at his conduct, his sad demeanour even forcing the usually harsh Twitterati to express sympathy.
