Bringing spin into play early on the opening day of a Test match can often yield impressive results. A prime example was seen in the third Test between India and New Zealand at Wankhede, where Washington Sundar displayed his bowling prowess by claiming the wickets of Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra.

‌New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and chose to bat at Wankhede Stadium. The visitors faced an early setback when Akash Deep dismissed Devon Conway in the fourth over. The pitch provided ample pace and bounce, effectively angling the ball to support Akash and Mohammad Siraj. With Will Young and Latham at the crease, New Zealand reached 27/1 by the eighth over. Then, India’s captain introduced spin, bringing Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack for the ninth over, where he bowled economically, allowing just a single run. Noticing the pitch’s assistance to spin, Washington Sundar was then brought on from the other end to curb New Zealand’s scoring rate. The Chennai bred was immediately proved effective when he scalped Latham and Rachin Ravindra in quick succession.

On the final ball of the 16th over, Washington delivered a well-pitched ball that drifted in towards off stump. The New Zealand captain was lured forward to defend, but the ball straightened just enough to beat the outside edge, sneaking past him and crashing into the off stump. Washington’s brilliance continued on the last ball of the 20th over, where he bowled another good-length delivery, angled toward middle stump. His perfect off-spin tempted Rachin to step forward defensively, but again, the ball straightened and slipped past the edge, clipping the off stump. A disappointed Rachin shook his head as he walked off, while Washington celebrated his second wicket, embraced by his teammates. Fans on Twitter were quick to praise Washington’s skillful bowling.
