A man in form can be an unstoppable force and when the man’s name is Kieron Pollard, he can cause utter destruction with the bat in hand. Known for his insane power-hitting ability, the Trinbago Knight Riders was rattled with pure intelligence from Naveen-ul-Haq during the recent CPL clash.

The ploy to field first at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown worked well in favour of the visiting side after Akeal Hosein extracted a couple of scalps in the first over of the game. However, Quinton de Kock’s 39 and Rovman Powell’s unbridled 59 powered the Barbados Royals to 156 before Maheesh Theekshana’s three-wicket haul pushed the Knight Riders on the back foot in the chase. Having lost five wickets by the 16th over for 118 runs, the hope of Pollard’s finishing prowess was put down to rest by Naveen’s mastery.

With 39 to win from 22 balls and an in-form Pollard at the strike, any bowler would’ve fickle to perfect an execution. However, that was not the case with Naveen who came over the wicket and bowled a fuller off-cutter outside the stumps. Pollard looked to accelerate by taking it down, but in the process, he got an inside edge on an attempted slog, and the white cherry ricocheted into the stumps. The ploy to keep the ball’s line away from the big-hitter’s body worked well for the Afghan pacer, leaving him in ecstasy. The Twitterverse showered praise for the clever act from Naveen to deceive Pollard who could snatch the game away from the Royals in quick time.

A bold approach in a team sport often leaves the opposition frenetic and rattled. With the modernising of T20 cricket, such an intent has been shown by many batters including Phil Salt who smacked a hat-trick of sixes to send Aaron Hardie on the back foot during the second T20I versus Australia.
