Ashes | Twitter shocked as brilliant Carse helps Green slam hammer into own foot with rash run-out

Cricketing cardinal sins don't get much worse than getting run-out on the first day of a Test match. Yet, Cameron Green dared commit it when his team was at sea in the Boxing Day Test with Brydon Carse's brilliance aiding the cause to leave the Kangaroos in dire straits in the first innings.

‌England took to the field on Boxing Day with a rekindled spirit as their bowlers bowled with purpose to bowl out Australia for 152 in the fourth Ashes Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. Josh Tongue played wrecker-in-chief with his maiden five wicket haul Down Under which included scalps of three of the hosts' top-four. The only phase of play where the Kangaroos seemed to resist was when Michael Neser joined Cameron Green at the crease shortly after Lunch as the duo stitched together the only half-century stand of the innings. However, just when they seemed destined to put on a rearguard action to save their team yet again, Green's impatience and inexperience at shepherding the tail cost him and his team dear.

The senior partner in the combo, Green had clawed together 17 runs while Neser had raced past 30 on the back of a hattrick of boundaries off Tongue in the 42nd over. The pressure inevitably found its way to Carse at the other end, who took the ball in hand well aware the Kangaroos were placing them under the pump for the first time in the match. But before he could showcase any artistry to change the fact, his rivals themselves crumbled. Green defended the first ball which ended not too far rom the deck and called for a quick single, inexplicably desperate to get to the other end. However, the all-rounder stuttered ever so slightly before commiting to the run, and ran diagonally across the surface to further exacerbate matters. Carse wasted no moment in racing to the red cherry in his follow through and in one smooth motion threw down the stumps while Green put in a despairing dive. As it turned out, the towering West Australian was well short, with the umpire not even bothering to go upstairs before raising his finger.

Green was distraught as he walked off, his wicket culminating in three more in quick succession as his search for a significant Ashes knock continued.

A philosophical idea meant to govern a group is only as strong as the person who buys into it the least. A chaotic Ashes Down Under has tested the tenets of Bazball and the men that execute it relentlessly, but just when England seemed to have shelved the experiment, Harry Brook augured hope.

If the numbers are to be believed, Steve Smith falls victim in Test cricket every 56 runs on average, making him the best Test batter of the generation. Yet even his talent had no answer to a peach Josh Tongue produced in the first session of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne on Friday.
