ENG W vs IND W ODIs | Twitter impressed as Deepti and Sneh lead all-round performance to put India ahead
India Women beat England Women by four wickets in the first ODI at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. Deepti Sharma anchored the chase with an unbeaten half-century after Sneh Rana led the bowling attack with a two-wicket spell to guide the visitors to a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
After pocketing the T20I series 3-2, India Women started the ODI leg against England Women with a four-wicket win at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Thursday. Deepti Sharma scored a composed half-century while Sneh Rana recorded an impressive spell of 2/31 in 10 overs to help the visitors take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Batting first, England Women managed 258/6 in their allotted 50 overs with contrasting half-centuries from Sophia Dunkley and Alice Davidson-Richards. Dunkley hit nine boundaries to score in the match with a 92-ball 83 while Davidson-Richards scored two fours in her patient knock of 53 in 73 balls. Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt (41) and Emma Lamb (39) could not capitalise on their good starts, while Sophie Ecclestone’s unbeaten cameo of 23 from 19 balls took the hosts past the 250-run mark. Off-spinner Sneh Rana took two wickets in her miserly spell, while rookie pacer Kranti Goud accounted for both England openers in an incisive spell with the new ball.
Chasing 259, India had a good start with Smriti Mandhana (28) and Pratika Rawal (36) adding 48 runs in 48 balls before the visitors slipped from 94/1 to 124/4. However, all-rounder Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues calmed the nerves with a 90-run association before the latter was dismissed for a 54-ball 48, an innings which consisted of five fours. But Deepti continued unperturbed as she took India to 262/6 in the company of Amanjot Kaur. The southpaw hit three fours and a six to remain unbeaten on 62 off 64 balls, and her unbroken 33-run stand with Amanjot (20* off 14) meant India sealed the contest with 10 balls to spare. Off-spinner Charlie Dean was the pick among the England bowlers with figures of 2/52 in 10 overs, while Sophie Ecclestone picked up a wicket on her return to the ODI side.
