NZ vs AUS | Twitter impressed as Marsh’s blitzkrieg powers Australia to dominant win in first T20I
Australia beat New Zealand by six wickets in the first T20I at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Mitchell Marsh shone with a whirlwind half-century to power the visitors to the target after Tim Robinson’s century had taken the Kiwis to a formidable total.
Mitchell Marsh’s stunning knock pushed Tim Robinson’s maiden T20I century to the background as Australia beat New Zealand by six wickets in the first T20I in Mount Maunganui. The Australian skipper smashed five sixes and nine fours en route to a 43-ball 85 as Australia romped past the target with 21 balls to spare.
The hosts had a nightmarish start after being put in to bat in blustery conditions at Bay Oval as Josh Hazlewood and Ben Dwarshuis reduced them to 6/3 in the second over. But Robinson and Daryl Mitchell displayed intent to take the side to 49/3 at the end of the powerplay. Their 92-run partnership for the fourth wicket steadied the Kiwis’ ship before Mitchell departed for 34 from 23 balls. However, Robinson smashed five sixes and six fours during his unbeaten knock of 106 from 66 balls to power the hosts to a formidable 181/6. For the visitors, Dwarshuis ended with 2/40 in his four-over spell, while Hazlewood and Matthew Short picked up a wicket each.
In reply, Marsh and Head showed intent from ball one, adding 67 runs for the opening wicket inside the powerplay. With Marsh firing from one end, the other batters chipped in with valuable cameos from the other. Head scored 31 off 18 balls, including six fours, while Short and Tim David scored 29 and 21, respectively, as the visitors reached 185/4 to complete a dominating win. Pacer Matt Henry picked up 2/43 while Zakary Foulkes and Kyle Jamieson had a wicket each.
