IND vs WI | Jaiswal sets eyes on another double as India lose just two wickets on Day 1
India won the toss at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Friday and brilliantly cashed in on with the bat on a flat track , heading into Stumps on Day 1 at XXX/X. Yashasvi Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 173 alongside skipper Shubman Gill (20*), while Sai Sudharsan also found success with an 87.
Brief score: IND 318/2 (Jaiswal 173*, Sudharsan 87; Warrican 2/60) at Stumps on Day 1
Opting to bat first, Indian opening pair of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal began cautiously against the new ball despite just faint swing on offer on a wintry Delhi morning. It did not take long for the boundaries to start flowing though as Rahul laid down a makrer with back-to-back fours in the consecutive overs just before drinks, paving the way for a six-over spell post-drinks that brought the team 29 runs. However, the approach ended up being the undoing of Rahul for 38 when he stepped down the track against Jomel Warrican, only for the red cherry to turn viciously past the bat for an easy stumping and end a 58-run first innings stand. Nevertheless, Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan held firm till Lunch, ticking the score along to 94 without any further loss.
Jaiswal began the second session with loud intent, smashing three fours off Jayden Seales in the very first over to bring up yet another Test half-century. The duo encountered little trouble against any member of the Windies attack, with Sudharsan comfortable hanging back in the crease while Jaiswal spared no bad ball as they sped to the fence. Sudharsan soon brought up a second Test half-century before Jaiswal converted his into a ton, off just 145 deliveries and laced with 14 boundaries. By Tea, the score had grown to 220/1, with 126 runs coming in the second session at well over four runs an over.
The third session began on a similar note as Jaiswal thrashed the second ball for a four off Roston Chase, an ominous sign for the opposition. His partner Sudharsan looked set for a century too, edging no more than two balls during his entire stay but with just 13 runs remaining for a maiden milestone, Warrican spun another one sharply into the southpaw to send him packing plumb LBW. Skipper Shubman Gill walked in next, with the score 251/2 and 22 overs remaining in the day, taking no time to be comfortable at the crease. Gill chose to keep it safe and simple as the Windies hammered down on the scoring rate before taking the new ball at the start of the 83rd over. The hard new ball only accelerated the scoring though as Jaiswal struck three boundaries towards the close of play, either side of surviving a review that had the ball missing the stumps, and in the process surpassed his previous highest score against the West Indies of 171. By Stumps, the partnership had grown to 77 runs as India headed to the dugout at 318/2 and in complete control of the game.
