IND vs WI | Twitter stunned as Kuldeep abandons spin for sheer pace but Jurel fails to hold onto chance
Perhaps the most frustrating situation a Test unit can endure is to spend 200-plus overs in the field and grind out 19 wickets, only to then face a record 10th wicket stand. Kuldeep Yadav in Delhi on Monday decided he had had enough as he went seam-up to surprise the batters, and it almost worked.
India were made to toil hard in the field at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Day 4 of the second Test against the West Indies as John Campbell and Shai Hope extended their overnight stand to nearly 200 with a ton each. Even after the Men in Blue broke the stand an hour into the first session, skipper Roston Chase dug in as the first-innings deficit of 270 was surpassed in his supervision to ensure India will have to come out to bat if they are to triumph. The hosts responded brilliantly to the threat thereafter, triggering a collapse from 271/3 to 311/9 on the stroke of Tea to get within sight of a result, only for Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales to frustrate the hosts further by refusing to give away their wickets. The former brought up a half-century and with the lead bordering on 100, Kuldeep Yadav decided it was time to go wild with an outrageous delivery that nearly brought his team the goods.
On the penultimate ball of the 114th over, Kuldeep trundled in from around the stumps to Seales and delivered what seemed to be a routine delivery slightly wide of the stumps on a length. However, the left-arm wristspinner had cleverly gone seam-up, taking the wrist out of the equation with two fingers pushing the ball through the threads to deliver at a speed of 107.8 km/h. Seales insitinctively tried to cut the ball away but the pace meant he was late on the shot, and got a thick top-edge from his attempt. Luckily for him, Jurel was equally surprised as the red cherry thumped into his pads before rolling behind towards the boundary, allowing the batsmen to run three and take the lead into three figures.
The entire Indian contingent was disappointed, as was former wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik in the commentary box stating Jurel was better than that, but Twitterati was quick to point out it was far from an everyday catch given Kuldeep's surprise tactic.
