Watch, SA vs AFG | Drama, drama, and more drama as Stubbs’ last-ball six takes game to second Super Over
Never has a T20 World Cup match been decided by a second Super Over, but history was written courtesy of Tristan Stubbs’ heroics against Afghanistan in Ahmedabad. The South African batter tonked a last-ball six to equal the Afghanistan tally in a thrilling game that made way for a second Super Over.
With Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz all scoring blistering half-centuries for their respective sides in the allotted 20 overs, and Afghanistan making 17 in their first essay of the Super Over, it all boiled down to how the Proteas would deal with the pressure in the one-over chase.
Though Dewald Brevis started promisingly with a six on the second ball, he was dismissed by a clever change of pace from Fazalhaq Farooqi off the very next. As Stubbs walked in, the equation stood at 11 off the last three, and all hopes were pinned on him.
And the batter did not disappoint as he hit a boundary off his first ball before playing out a dot in the next. Despite the win going out of the equation, unless Farooqi did something wrong, Stubbs still kept his cool to churn out an unbelievable hit off the last ball to level the scores.
With the left-arm pacer missing his yorker by the barest of margins, the Delhi Capitals’ batter was quick to pounce on the low fulltoss to send it over a jumping Mohammad Nabi at long off. Stubbs was supercharged as he got ready for the second Super Over, before starting it off with another six en route to scripting history by winning the first game in the T20 World Cup that went to a second Super Over.
Its heart-stopping stuff!
