Less than two years ago, Shivam Dube's bowling career seemed to have become an artifact of the past. However, the Gautam Gambhir era has arrived like a phoenix for the veteran, and the budding all-rounder showed why once again in Ahmedabad on Sunday by jolting South Africa at a crucial juncture.

‌India got off to a brilliant start in their opening T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights encounter against the previous edition's runners-up South Africa as three wickets in the first-four overs restricted the Proteas to 20/3. However, the visitors were not ready to go down without a fight, one they delivered superbly through a fierce counterattack. Yet, jsut as they were beginning to take ascendancy, Shivam Dube came out of syllabus to turn the game on its head.

South Africa's comeback was led by the dynamic duo of Dewald Brevis and David Miller, two men at opposing ends of their career yet equally determined to get their team into a winning position. While the former took some time to settle under pressure, Miller channelled all his experience to immediately put the Men in Blue back on guard with a spree of early boundaries. The pair took a particular liking to Varun Chakravarthy, producing some stunning hits that had the mystery spinner sprawling and India's X-factor suddenly looked uncharacteristically out of his depth. In no time the partnership had bloomed to 97 runs in a measly 50 deliveries, and the hosts had no answers. Until skipper Suryakumar Yadav turned to his man for troubled times, Dube. Despite being hit for 15 in his first over, SKY gave him the second shot but the situation looked ominous when Brevis greeted him back with another handsome maximum. However, the very next ball, Dube dug a cutter into the surface and Brevis tried to power it for midwicket but failed to get any timing on it, as the Kookaburra sailed high into the Ahmedabad sky before settling safely into Abhishek Sharma's hands.

Twitterati was full of praise for Dube.
