The pitch at the Niranjan Shah Stadium played tricks on the batters during India’s innings against New Zealand in the second ODI. With variable bounce being a constant on a two-paced surface, Devon Conway was surprised by Harshit Rana’s awkward bounce, losing his bat after fending the ball off.

‌India recovered well through KL Rahul’s much-needed century after a middle-order collapse in the second ODI against New Zealand in Rajkot on Wednesday. The Men in Blue were staring down the barrel after being reduced to 118/4, in the 24th over, from a healthy-looking 70/0. But Rahul’s unbeaten 112, along with captain Shubman Gill’s half-century, took the side to a healthy 284/7 in their allotted 50 overs, with medium pacer Kristian Clarke picking up three wickets for the Kiwis.

Meanwhile, Devon Conway gave the Kiwis a good start with boundaries off Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana in the first three overs before being caught by surprise by the latter. With the pitch being two-paced and the bounce often variable and low, Conway tried to counter that with a crouching stance and meeting the ball as close as possible.

But a short of a length delivery from Harshit in the third ball of the fourth over bounced more than what Conway expected. The southpaw tried to fend it off, but lost the bat just after he made contact with the ball, with Henry Nicholls immediately calling for a quick single.

Though Conway was caught up with the thought of losing the bat, a loud call from Nicholls helped, as he immediately took off. But even after reaching the non-striker’s end, Conway was puzzled as to how he lost his bat, gesturing the same to Nicholls.

However, Nicholls helped his senior mate with his willow as both exchanged fist bumps for play to continue again. Twitter was in splits as Conway suddenly turned baseball player to take off without his bat.

Oh!

Conway gone!

Bowled!

What a ball!
