The second half of the Women's Premier League has started, as the tournament has now shifted to Vadodara. And it was a positive start for RCB, as they clinched a massive win over Gujarat Giants. Now they have become the first team in this season to qualify for the playoffs.
With eight matches still remaining in the league stages of the Women's Premier League, we already have a team with Q mark ahead of their names. And it is the WPL 2024 winners, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The team has been dominant this season, making history with their all-round performances.
RCB has played just five games this season and they have won all five of them. This has marked the team's spot in the Playoffs of the tournament. It is also likely that a win in their next game will help the team to get their spot in the finals of the tournament. Fans still remain eager to see whether RCB franchise can get its third trophy in three consecutive years or not.
1. RCB's Impressive Win Over GG
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Giants faced each other in the 12th match of the tournament. This game was also the start of the Vadodara leg of the tournament, as all the games will now be played at this venue. RCB was batting first in this game, and they managed to put up a massive total of 178 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
Gautami Naik played a vital role in this innings, as she alone scored 73 runs off 55 balls. Gujarat Giants also had a tough time with the ball, as the team gave 21 runs in the form of extras. This also made Gujarat the fourth highest run scorer for RCB. In Gujarat’s innings, the RCB bowlers started to give them some early blows.
The team stood at the score of 56/6, as Lauren Bell, Sayali Satghare, and Nadine de Klerk took wickets. Ashleigh Gardner and Bharti Fulmali tried their best to help Gujarat get close to the target. But the match was already gone, as Gardner lost her wicket after scoring a half-century.
Eventually, Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended up grabbing the win by 61 runs. This has also helped RCB to become the first team to reach the playoffs in the current season. Playing their first five games, the team stands undefeated, and will be eager to continue the same in the remaining matches.
2. RCB Breaks MI’s Record
Royal Challengers Bengaluru has now secured a WPL record completely to their name. The team is now having the record of most consecutive wins in the tournament, holding 6 wins which extend from the last season till now. Earlier this record was being held by Mumbai Indians, but with the match against Gujarat Giants, it is now in the hands of RCB.
RCB is now having five wins in the current season and they also have a win which they secured in the last game of the previous season. With these six wins, RCB has the record of most consecutive wins in the history of the tournament. It should be noted that the team is continuing its extraordinary form, which might even help them to continue the winning streak even more.
It should be noted that only three times earlier a team has managed to get 5 consecutive wins in the WPL. Two times it was Mumbai Indians, who have won the title also twice, and the remaining one time it was the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. When RCB had achieved this record the last time, they were able to win the WPL, which changed things forever for the franchise.
Along with that, RCB is now just one win away from sealing their spot in the finals. They still have three games left in the league stages, and winning just one of them confirms their position in the finals. It will be intense to see which team RCB will be facing in the ultimate clash of the game.
3. Who Takes the Other Two Spots?
With RCB already booking its place in the playoffs, there are just two more spots up for grabs. The format of WPL is not just like the IPL where four teams make it to the playoffs. The team which finishes at the top is able to directly make it to the finals of the tournament. While the teams at 2nd and 3rd fight for the remaining spot.
Taking a look at the points table, Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz stand a good chance to make it to the finals of the tournament. Gujarat Giants are also having the same number of wins, but they will require some big wins in the remaining three games which might help them to get qualified for the playoffs.
